Get Inspired by Ayrton Senna – See Motivation as the Key
Yesterday it was 20 years since Ayrton Senna tragically died. Senna was a great Formula 1 racing driver; for many of us he was the best driver in F1 history. Not only he was technically skilled for racing, he was also a wise man and a memory of him and his ideas can guide us in our career development.
His key for success was the motivation. This is what he said in one of his interviews:
“By being a racing driver you are under risk all the time. By being a racing driver means you are racing with other people. And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, we are competing to win. And the main motivation to all of us is to compete for victory, it's not to come 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. I race to win as long as I feel it's possible. Sometimes you get it wrong? Sure, it's impossible to get it right all the time. But I race designed to win, as long as I feel I'm doing it right.”
In terms of a career development, how can we get inspired here? Senna is speaking about having your eyes opened so that when you see the opportunity (the gap), you are ready to use it and get the best out of it (compete for victory). Motivation is a very important factor in your careers and without a clear focus, it won’t work for any of you. It won’t come to you as such. It only comes with a higher level of self-awareness. A self-aware person knows what they are looking for, what is their ultimate goal and they pursue it; just as Senna did. And when it all goes wrong they wouldn’t get discouraged. They just keep going, keep trying, keep racing…, because they know what they are pursuing in their career. They have the motivation.
This is a simple Senna’s advice translated into career development jargon. Use it wisely ;-).
